The Program
We adapt our program to suit the different communities where we work. We can do it for you! Do you want to run a RRL program for your children? Contact us and we’ll make it happen together.
THE DETAILS:
One hour, once a week for eight weeks, a trained facilitator works with the same 15+ elementary school children. A particular theme is chosen for the program: water, fruit, friendship, community, potatoes, and sustainability have all been RRL themes. At each session the children, wearing their chef hats, are presented with some interchange or activity related to that theme (e.g., a local farmer explains what he does on his potato farm) and the children are then given a communication activity (e.g., write a poem about the potato farm, draw a potato farm). Each session builds on the previous sessions, and the children progress from communicating in simple ways to more complex ones (e.g., working on their own, working in partnership, collaborating as a group). All types of communication are encouraged and supported: written, visual, aural, eye communication, you name it. These activities are recorded by the children in their personal journals, which allows us to track their development. Pre- and post-program surveys are given to document the children’s progress as well as the overall effectiveness of the program. An independent educator completes a pre- and post-program assessment of the children and the program.
